Career Background

Leah’s career began with a foundation in photography and English at Sam Houston State University, where she was inducted into Sigma Tau Delta, the National English Honor Society. That creative background led her into digital printing at one of Houston’s print shops operating the city’s first Indigo digital press.

Working in commercial print production gave her hands-on experience with offset, digital, large format, and specialty print applications. That technical understanding of how marketing materials are actually produced would later shape her approach to design.

As her career progressed, Leah moved into graphic design and marketing production, contributing to national point-of-purchase campaigns for brands including Shell and Texaco while working at PointSmith.

She later managed a Houston print shop before launching Blueleaf Creative in 2005, bringing together her experience in photography, print production, and design into a firm focused on strategic marketing communication.

Evolution of Skills

As marketing technology evolved, so did Leah’s skillset.

Photography led to printing.
Printing led to design.
Design led to copywriting.
Copywriting led to web.
Web now extends into AI.

It is a rare, connected, and progressive history built over more than two decades.

Professional Perspective

Few designers bring deep experience across print production, copywriting, web development, and AI search optimization. That connected perspective allows Blueleaf Creative to bridge strategy, design, and execution, helping businesses translate complex ideas into clear marketing communication.

From her own experiences when she was starting a small business, Spring resident Leah Dossey now counsels other women starting businesses and helps them get their names out to the public.

“When I first started, it was hard for me so if I can help other women who are struggling like I was, then I have been successful,” Dossey said.

After working a part-time job for several years, Dossey found it hard to balance home life and the workplace while working for someone else.

“At that point, I realized it was not going to work for me and my best option would be to go into business for myself. I knew I wanted to create a business and environment that would empower women,” Dossey said.

Blueleaf Creative was started in 2005 and has been growing stronger and larger every year.

Blueleaf Creative is a company that provides businesses around the community and around the nation with brochures, postcards, flyers, T-shirt designs, business cards and other items that help promote the business.

“I have spent over 10 years in the business, as I first started with a minor in photography. Soon after, I progressed into digital, offset and screen printing, and graphic and web design,” Dossey said. “I have had my hand in about every aspect of the business.”

The company’s first full-time employee will start in January and currently there is one part-time employee besides Dossey helping provide materials, web design and other products for small businesses around the community.

Blueleaf Creative allows Dossey and her employees to work from home, which frees them up to take care of things at home while being able to work.

Additionally, Blueleaf Creative was recognized as one of only 25 nationwide recipients of the first Sam Walton Emerging Entrepreneur Award.

“I was completely floored when I found out about the award. Never in a million years would I have thought I would have been selected for this award. I was honored,” Dossey said.

The award is sponsored by Sam’s Club and Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence. Awardees receive one year of paid professional business coaching, free access to Count Me In’s educational resources and seminars, and a Sam’s Club business membership.

“The award had criteria that the business nominated had to be owned by a woman and contribute to the community,” Dossey said.

Dossey supports the community with Blueleaf Creative but has also spent more than 800 hours volunteering with different organizations throughout the community, including Cub Scout Pack 355 and reading to students twice a month at Winship Elementary School in Spring.

“It is very important for me to give back to my community and show that I care. It helps me become a better leader for Blueleaf Creative and illustrates how much I love Spring and care about the surrounding areas,” Dossey said.

Blueleaf Creative has done work for Shell, Texaco, Coca-Cola and a variety of other businesses, large and small, from around the community.

Dossey is also donating 10 percent of all sales through the end of October to the Hurricane Ike Relief Fund to help fellow business owners and customers who were affected by the storm.

“The Internet has been a wonderful tool for our ability to help companies around the nation as we continue to grow,” Dossey said. “It has been amazing getting the chance to meet individuals with the Count Me In program and we are planning to continue to give back to the community and grow.”

Design Approach

Design Is More Than Aesthetics

Effective design is not simply about making something look polished. It is about communicating clearly. Businesses often have complex services, technical products, or nuanced expertise that can be difficult to explain quickly. Good design helps translate those ideas into messaging and visuals that people immediately understand.

Leah approaches every project with that goal in mind: clarity first, then creativity.

Strategy Before Design

Before any layout, colors, or typography are considered, the focus is on understanding the client’s business, audience, and objectives. Marketing materials should support a larger business goal, whether that is helping a sales team explain a service, supporting a product launch, or strengthening a company’s credibility.

This strategic approach ensures that every design decision supports communication and real business outcomes.

Connecting Strategy, Messaging, and Execution

Because Leah’s background spans print production, copywriting, web development, and AI search optimization, projects at Blueleaf Creative are approached holistically rather than as isolated design tasks.

This connected perspective allows strategy, messaging, and design to work together, helping businesses communicate complex ideas clearly across print, digital, and emerging AI-driven platforms. Our team fills any gaps.
