Airflow4 Clinical Trial Marketing & Screening Materials System

Project Overview

This clinical trial materials system case study demonstrates how coordinated flyer design, brochure design, and screening guide development were used to create a unified suite of marketing and clinical tools that support patient recruitment, education, and staff workflow.

Project Summary

As the AIRFLOW clinical study progressed into a new phase, Nuvaira required a coordinated update across all patient-facing and staff-facing materials. Rather than redesigning each piece independently, the Airflow4 Clinical Trial Materials System was developed as a unified set of tools that work together to support recruitment, education, and screening.

The system includes a recruitment flyer for quick awareness, a trifold brochure for deeper patient education, and a patient screening guide designed for physician staff. Each piece serves a distinct role while maintaining consistency in structure, visual language, and usability across the full patient journey.

Client Background

Nuvaira is a medical device company focused on developing therapies for people with obstructive lung disease, particularly COPD. The company’s clinical research program includes the AIRFLOW studies, which evaluate a bronchoscopic treatment designed to improve outcomes for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These studies rely on clear, structured materials to support both patient recruitment and clinical workflow efficiency across participating sites.

Challenge

Aligning patient-facing and staff-facing materials into a cohesive, functional system

The project required more than updating individual assets. Each piece needed to serve a different audience and purpose while remaining consistent and easy to use across clinical environments.

Patient-facing materials needed to clearly communicate study information and support enrollment, while staff-facing tools needed to enable fast and accurate eligibility screening. At the same time, all materials had to remain compliant, readable, and adaptable as the study evolved.

Without a coordinated approach, this type of project often results in disconnected materials, inconsistent messaging, and increased friction for both patients and clinical staff.

Design Approach

The Airflow4 Clinical Trial Materials System was designed as a coordinated framework rather than a set of standalone pieces. Each asset was structured to support a specific role within the patient journey while maintaining consistency across layout, hierarchy, and visual language.

Because clinical trial materials often involve complex information and time-sensitive use, the system was designed to reduce cognitive load and improve comprehension. Print materials are proven to require less mental effort to process, with studies showing a 21% reduction in cognitive effort, making them more effective for communicating structured information in real-world clinical environments (Temple University | Neural Decision Making Study | 2026).

Material Roles Within the System

The Airflow4 recruitment flyer design was created for quick visibility and initial patient engagement, providing a high-level overview that supports immediate understanding in clinical settings.

The trifold brochure design extends that interaction, offering a more detailed, take-home resource that allows patients to review study information at their own pace and access additional details through QR-based enrollment and education

The patient screening guide shifts focus to internal workflow, giving physician staff a structured tool for evaluating eligibility through a combination of visual cues and detailed checklist criteria.

System-Level Design Decisions

Consistency across all materials was critical. Layout structures, spacing, typography, and content organization were aligned to create a unified experience, reducing confusion and improving usability across different touchpoints.

All files were built using paragraph and character styles, creating a scalable system that supports efficient updates and maintains consistency as study materials evolve. This approach ensures that changes can be implemented across multiple assets without introducing inconsistencies or requiring full redesigns.

Coordinated Material System

All assets were designed to work together, supporting different stages of the patient journey and clinical workflow.

Role-Based Design Strategy

Each piece was structured for a specific audience, from patient education to staff-driven screening.

Workflow-Aligned Execution

Design decisions reflect real-world use in clinical settings, from intake to patient follow-up.

Services Provided

This project combined brochure design, flyer design, and marketing materials design to create a coordinated clinical communication system that supports both patient engagement and internal workflow efficiency.

Results

The Airflow4 Clinical Trial Materials System improved how information is communicated across both patient and clinical staff interactions. Each piece now supports a specific role, allowing patients to move from awareness to understanding while enabling staff to efficiently evaluate eligibility.

The consistency across materials reduces confusion and creates a more cohesive experience throughout the patient journey. Patients encounter a clear progression of information, while staff benefit from tools that align with real-world workflows.

The system also improves long-term usability. With a structured file system and consistent design framework in place, updates can be made more efficiently as study requirements evolve, reducing the need for repeated design work and maintaining consistency across all materials.
