Airflow4 Clinical Trial Recruitment Flyer Design

Project Overview

This clinical trial recruitment flyer case study demonstrates how structured layout design and compliance-driven formatting were used to create a clear, scalable patient recruitment asset that supports enrollment and in-office distribution.

Client: Nuvaria
Client Location: Minneapolis, MN
Industry: Clinical Research / Healthcare
Project Type: Clinical Trial Patient Recruitment Flyer Design
Deliverables: Recruitment Flyer, Scalable Poster Format
Purpose: Support patient recruitment and study enrollment
Use Case: Physician office display and patient handouts
Distribution: Printed flyers and in-office posters across participating clinical locations

Project Summary

This clinical trial recruitment flyer was developed to support patient education and enrollment as the Airflow study progressed into a new phase. Nuvaria required updated materials that reflected new branding and trial information while remaining flexible enough for both handout and in-office poster use. The final design provides a clear, structured format that improves patient understanding and simplifies ongoing updates for participating physician offices. This piece was developed as part of the broader Airflow4 Clinical Trial Materials System, which includes coordinated patient education and screening tools.

Client Background

Nuvaira is a medical device company focused on developing therapies for people with obstructive lung disease, particularly COPD. The company’s work centers on its targeted lung denervation technology, a bronchoscopic treatment approach designed to improve outcomes for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The AIRFLOW studies are part of Nuvaira’s clinical research program evaluating the safety and efficacy of its lung denervation system in COPD treatment.

Challenge

Updating clinical trial materials without increasing production complexity

As the Airflow study advanced to a new phase, existing materials became outdated and no longer aligned with updated branding or study requirements. The client needed a refreshed recruitment piece that could serve multiple purposes without increasing design costs or creating separate files for each use case.

At the same time, the content needed to remain compliant, highly structured, and easy for patients to understand within a limited amount of space. Physician offices also required the ability to update participating location details without disrupting the overall layout or design integrity.

The design focused on creating a standardized, scalable layout that could function equally well as a flyer and a poster. Content was reorganized into a clear visual hierarchy, allowing patients to quickly understand the purpose of the study, eligibility considerations, and next steps without requiring additional explanation.

Because clinical trial materials often contain dense, technical information, the layout was intentionally structured to reduce cognitive load and improve comprehension. Print materials are proven to require less mental effort to process, with studies showing a 21% reduction in cognitive effort, making them more effective for communicating complex information in a limited amount of space (Temple University | Neural Decision Making Study | 2026).

Structured sections, consistent spacing, and simplified content grouping were used to support this goal, ensuring that key information could be quickly scanned and understood within a clinical environment.

Design decisions also prioritized long-term usability. The file was built with paragraph and character styles, allowing future updates to be made efficiently while maintaining consistency across materials. This reduced reliance on ongoing design intervention and gave the client greater control over content updates.

Standardized Layout System

A structured layout ensures consistent presentation across both flyer and poster formats.

Compliance-Drive Formatting

Content was organized to meet clinical communication requirements while remaining easy to scan.

Scalable Design Format

The design adapts seamlessly from 8.5 × 11 handouts to 17 × 22 in-office posters.

Improved Visual Hierachy

Clear sectioning allows patients to quickly understand key study information.

Future-Ready File Structure

Paragraph and character styles enable efficient updates across all trial materials.

Services Provided

This project combined clinical trial recruitment flyer design with structured file development and client training, resulting in a scalable asset that improves patient understanding while enabling ongoing updates across participating physician locations.

Results

The updated Airflow4 recruitment flyer improved clarity for patients while simplifying internal workflows for the client. Information is now presented in a structured format that allows patients to quickly understand the study and determine relevance without additional explanation.

The standardized layout also reduced friction for participating physician offices. Staff can update location-specific information without disrupting the design, making the material more practical for ongoing use across multiple sites.

In addition to improving usability, the project delivered operational value by reducing the need for multiple versions of the same asset. A single, scalable file now supports both flyer distribution and poster display, lowering design costs and simplifying production.

Flyer Design Results Summary

Result Area Outcome Impact
Patient Communication Structured layout and compliance-aware formatting improved clarity and made study information easier for patients to understand. Helped patients quickly grasp the purpose of the study and key details in a limited-space format.
Operational Efficiency One design was built to scale from an 8.5 x 11 flyer to a 17 x 22 office poster. Reduced duplication, controlled design costs, and created a more flexible asset for clinical use.
Document Usability Paragraph and character styles were created to support cleaner edits and more consistent updates. Made it easier for stakeholders to update physician office information without disrupting the layout.
Client Education Nuvaria received guidance on packaging InDesign files, managing links, and maintaining consistent file structure across applications. Improved internal handling of design files and supported smoother future updates beyond this single project.
