Project Summary

This trifold brochure was developed as part of the Airflow4 clinical trial update to support patient education and enrollment. While the flyer provided a quick overview, the brochure served as a more detailed, take-home resource that allowed patients to review study information at their own pace. The final piece integrates structured content and QR-based access to the enrollment website, extending engagement beyond the clinical setting. The brochure was developed as part of the Airflow4 Clinical Trial Materials System, working alongside recruitment and screening materials to support the full patient journey.

Client Background

Nuvaira is a medical device company focused on developing therapies for people with obstructive lung disease, particularly COPD. The company’s clinical research program includes the AIRFLOW studies, which evaluate a bronchoscopic treatment designed to improve outcomes for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These studies rely on clear, compliant communication materials to support both patient understanding and recruitment across clinical sites.

Challenge

Creating a detailed patient education piece that remains clear, compliant, and easy to use

As the Airflow study advanced to a new phase, existing brochure materials no longer reflected updated trial information or branding. The client needed a redesigned piece that could clearly communicate more detailed study information while remaining easy for patients to understand and navigate.

The brochure also needed to function as both an in-office discussion tool and a take-home reference, requiring a balance between depth of information and readability. In addition, the inclusion of a QR code meant the piece needed to seamlessly connect printed content with a digital enrollment experience.

Design Approach

The brochure was designed to guide patients through the study in a logical, easy-to-follow sequence. Content was reorganized into clearly defined panels, allowing each section to focus on a specific part of the patient journey, from understanding the study to taking the next step toward enrollment.

Because patient-facing clinical materials often include complex medical information, the layout was intentionally structured to reduce cognitive load and improve comprehension. Print materials are proven to require less mental effort to process, with studies showing a 21% reduction in cognitive effort, making them more effective for communicating complex information in a clear, accessible format (Temple University | Neural Decision Making Study | 2026).

Special attention was given to panel flow and hierarchy, ensuring that patients could scan the brochure quickly while still accessing deeper information when needed. The QR code was integrated as a natural extension of the content, positioned to guide patients from printed material to the enrollment website without disrupting the reading experience.

The file was also built using paragraph and character styles, creating a consistent system that supports future updates across all Airflow materials and reduces the need for repeated design work.

Results

The Airflow4 trifold brochure improved how study information is presented to patients, making it easier to understand complex clinical details within a structured, easy-to-follow format. Patients can review the material at their own pace, reinforcing information introduced during in-office discussions.

The integration of a QR code extended the usefulness of the brochure beyond print, providing a direct pathway to the study’s enrollment and education website. This connection between physical and digital content supports continued engagement after the initial interaction.

In addition to improving patient communication, the project created a more efficient system for ongoing use. The structured layout and style-based file setup allow the client to maintain consistency across materials while making updates more efficiently as the study progresses.
