It depends on your budget and what you are wanting to accomplish with your website. Like building a home, the cost is going to increase with size and features. Hire the best web designer you can afford. Talk to at least 3 different web designers. Do you feel like they are really interested in understanding your business? Did they ask you about the primary goal of your website? Did they explain things clearly to you, in a way that was easy to understand (not throw a bunch of tech-speak at you)? Are they doing the work in-house or contracting it out to somewhere else?
Red Flags
If you get the feeling they may be “flaky” run away! If they didn’t return your call in a timely manner, run away! If they talked down to you, run away. If they seemed more interested in selling you a website vs creating a website for your business…run away.
Green Flags
When you find a web designer / web developer who listens, wants to understand your website business goals, educates and guides you through the process, AND is willing to ask you “What is your budget?” then you have a qualified web design candidate to do business with.
Talk money right away.
You don’t want to fall in love with a web designer you cannot afford. Websites can sell for as little at $199 (you get what you pay for).
Be prepared to spend $2,500 – $20,000+ on your website. YUP, that is a big range. You will most-likely get the best value working with a small web design studio or full-time (not part-time) freelancer. Bigger studios or agencies will cost more.
But what if I just want a Basic Website?
Unfortunately there is no such thing as a Basic Website Design (or basic houses). Think if you asked your home builder, “How much for a basic house?” Websites, like houses vary in price based on size, features and functionality.
Never purchase web design services based on price alone and remember what you are buying – you are buying the on-line presence for your business.
